Thirty citizens have commented that the commitment to establish the rule of law in the country and to protect the human rights and dignity of all people is being violated in a worrying manner due to the passive role of the interim government, including the law enforcement agencies. They said that incidents of mob violence or rioting have been occurring in various districts and areas of the country, including Dhaka, for the past 8 to 10 months. But there is almost no evidence that any strict legal action has been taken against those involved in these incidents. If proper legal measures, including criminal cases, had been taken against those involved, perhaps one after another of these mob violence incidents would not have occurred.
The 30 citizens sent a joint statement to the media on Tuesday. The statement condemned the physical assault of former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda due to mob violence and demanded that those involved in the incident be identified quickly and given strict punishment according to the law. In addition, the citizens demanded that the allegations against Nurul Huda be investigated properly and that justice be ensured, including exemplary accountability.
The statement said, “According to media reports, a group of people entered the house of former CEC KM Nurul Huda in Uttara, the capital, on Sunday, brought him out and tied him with a chain of shoes. Earlier, a case was filed against him by a political party. The video of the incident went viral on social media. Later, he was taken into police custody and was shown arrested in the case filed. A group of unruly people committed this act of violence in the presence of law enforcement agencies. We express our strong anger and condemnation of the government’s lenient role towards the aforementioned crime of violence and the law enforcement agencies, including the criminals. In addition to punishing those involved in this violence, we demand that justice be ensured through a proper investigation of the allegations against the former CEC, including exemplary accountability.”
